CROCKETT – The Crockett City Council met to discuss several propositions to help the city’s local economy on Monday, April 3.

The council approved Johnson Controls Inc. as the city’s partner for energy performance contracting services.

Johnson Controls will perform a preliminary survey of Crockett’s energy performance and provide a report to the city council on cost-saving measures at no up-front cost to the city.

“The focus of this project are things like waste-water treatment plants, lift stations and generators for the city,” Johnson Controls, Inc. representative Larry Jones said, “These are all things that can help Crockett save on energy.”

The contract was approved unanimously after brief deliberation.

Crockett City Park Advisory Board member Scott McCall presented an idea to the council to allocate funds from the Crockett City Pool to renovate other aspects of the park.

“The budget (the city) has this year (for the pool) is less than what it costs just to get the pool up and running,” McCall said. “We would like to redirect the money to possibly bring back tennis courts, add benches to the walk-paths, add bleachers to the soccer field, upgrade the playground equipment and add lighting to the park.”

The council approved the redirection of the pool funds after a brief discussion.

The council also approved an agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation for the temporary closure of a one-mile circuit of state right of ways in the downtown area for the Davy Crockett Classic Bike Race.

The race would offer publicity for Crockett and would help boost the local economy by bringing in contestants and vendors from across the state, a DCCBR representative said.

“We’re expecting 200 to 300 people in the racing portion and probably 50 to 100 people rally liners,” the representative said. “Most, if not all, of the people in attendance will be staying in the hotels in town for the two-day event.”

A festival also will be held within the confines of the racing area, the representative said.

“We want to have food vendors and local artists who want to showcase anything they have,” the representative said. “We want to provide a really cool event for the locals as well as the people coming from out of the county.”

The race is scheduled for the weekend of July 8-9.

The council also approved the employment contract for John Angerstein as city administrator after a brief executive session.

“It’s an honor to be awarded the position of city administrator,” Angerstein said. “I will try my best to do right by the people of this great city.”

The council discussed the appointment of council members Ernest Jackson and Mike Marsh, along with mayor Robert Meadows to serve on the Crockett fire chief application and interview panel.

“(Jackson and Marsh) are both willing to serve on the panel, along with myself if it is put into effect before my tenure (as mayor) is up,” Meadows said. “If not, the incoming mayor will serve alongside them.”

The Crockett City Council usually meets on the first and third Thursdays of every month in Crockett City Hall, located at 200 N. Fifth St.
