Lewis “Shorty” Hicks
On January 30, 1927, in Grapeland, Texas, Charles Hicks and Viola DeLane Hicks became the proud parents of a fine son whom they named Lewis Hicks, and affectionately called Shorty. Lewis loved to hunt, fish, and plant a garden.
On November 13, 1949, Shorty married Josephine Washington, and to this union, six (6) children were born. He accepted Christ as a young man and was a faithful member of County Line Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Elliott Marshall.
On January 4, 2019, Lewis transitioned peacefully.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Viola Hicks; wife, Josephine Hicks; son, Walter Lee Hicks; and siblings, AW Hicks, FL Hicks, and Mae Etta Dupree.
Left to cherish his legacy are sons, Lewis Earl Hicks, Albert (Sherika) Hicks both of Palestine, Texas, Richard (Lisa) Hicks of Grand Prairie, Texas, Rev. Larry Hicks of Houston, Texas, and Fredrick Lewis of Grapeland, Texas; daughters, Bobbie Walker of Grapeland, Texas, and Peggy (Wilbur) Marks of Dallas, Texas; brother, Algenon McDaniel of Port Arthur, Texas; sister, Maeola Nathaniel of Grapeland, Texas; and brother-in-law, Pridgeon Washington of Grapeland, Texas; and many grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends; and special friend, Mr. Edward Ellis.
Services were held Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Rising Star Baptist Church. Interment followed at Lee Washington Cemetery under the direction of Walker & Walker Funeral Home.
