Four Grapeland Players Hit Double Digits

GRAPELAND – While the Leon Lady Cougars may rule the court in volleyball, when it comes to basketball, the Lady Cougars have a ways to go to catch up with the district front-runners. The Grapeland Sandiettes reminded Leon about this on Friday as they crushed the Lady Cougars by a score of 76-31.

The Sandiettes raced out to a 17-pont lead after the first eight minutes of play as Kenya Woods opened up on fire. Woods had nine points in the first quarter to go along with five from KeKe Harris, four from Teira Jones and a three-pointer from Ragan Bowie.

The Lady Cougars’ points came from Sarah Grace Merry and Sarah Rains – both with two – as Leon

found itself staring up at a 21-4 deficit after one period of play.

Things didn’t get much better in the second quarter for Leon as Merry tallied the only four points for the Lady Cougars.

Grapeland, meanwhile continued to hammer away at the Leon defense. Hannah Chipman dropped in six, Woods added four, Harris knocked down a three-pointer and Tori Woodford chipped in two to help give the Sandiettes a 36-8 lead at halftime.

After the break, the Lady Cougars showed a little fight as they put up 14 points against the Grapeland defense. Tara Goolsby dropped in six points for Leon while Merry went for five and Rains hit from behind the arc.

While the Lady Cougars turned it up a little in the third period, so did the Sandiettes. Bowie and Harris combined for four three-pointers, Jones powered in five, Harris put in another four and Chipman made two from the charity stripe to give Grapeland a commanding 59-22 lead with eight minutes left to play .

In the fourth, Cindy Crane had a pair of baskets for the Lady Cougars while both Allee and Lori Pervis had two points apiece. Susan Brady added a free throw to bring the Leon scoring to a close.

Woodford paced the Sandiettes in the final period with seven points. Jones added six and both Bowie, as well as Harris, had two as the Sandiettes moved to 4-0 in District 20-2A with the 76-31 win.

On the game, Sarah Grace Merry led the Lady Cougars in scoring with 11. Tara Goolsby added six, Sarah Rains had five and Cindy Crane had four. Both Allee and Lori Pervis had two apiece while Susan Brady chipped in one for Leon.

The Sandiettes were paced by four players who scored in double figures, led by Kenya Woods with 17 points. KeKe Harris went for 16 and Teira Jones put in 15. Ragan Bowie netted 11, Tori Woodford added nine and Hannah Chipman had eight.
