2019 Girls Area Basketball

ANDERSON/HOUSTON COUNTY – In Anderson and Houston Counties, there are 12 independent school districts (ISD) – seven in Anderson County and five in Houston County. All 12 of these ISDs have basketball programs with both girls and boys teams.

During the remainder of the season, The Messenger Sports will attempt to keep you up-to-date with the latest scores and standings from the 12 schools, spanning Class A through Class 4A, in Regions III and IV.

The 12 teams are split between five districts. In Region III, Districts 19-2A, 20-2A, 20-3A and 19-4A will be covered. In Region IV, District 28-A will be covered.

District 19-2A is comprised of: Cayuga; Frost; Italy; Itasca; Kerens; and Malakoff Cross Roads.

District 20-2A is comprised of: Centerville; Grapeland; Groveton; Latexo; Leon; Lovelady and Slocum.

District 20-3A is comprised of: Buffalo; Crockett; Elkhart; Frankston; Groesbeck; Teague; and Westwood.

District 19-4A is comprised of: Fairfield; Madisonville; Mexia; Palestine; and Rusk.

In Region IV, District 28-A is comprised of: Apple Springs; Chireno; Groveton Centerville; Kennard; La Poynor; Laneville; Neches; Oakwood; and Wells.

So, let’s get started with the area girls. In District 19-2A and 19-4A, league play began on Friday, Jan. 4, but as of press time the scores were not yet available.

Moving to District 20-2A, the Grapeland Sandiettes sit atop the standings with a record of 3-0. The Centerville Lady Tigers are in second with a 2-0 record while the Lovelady Lions are in third at 1-1. The Slocum Lady Mustangs, the Leon Lady Cougars and Groveton Lady Indians are all tied for fourth place with 1-2 records while the Latexo Lady Tigers are currently seventh with a mark of 0-2.

The games from Dec. 11 showed Groveton defeating Latexo, 37-22; Grapeland defeating Slocum, 87-26; and Lovelady defeating Leon, 50-28.

The girls of District 20-2A were back in action on Dec. 14 as Centerville defeated Lovelady, 33-27; Grapeland defeated Groveton 73-11; and Slocum defeated Leon.

On Dec. 18, the girls played their last district game before the New Year. Leon defeated Groveton, 53-34; Centerville defeated Slocum, 45-36; and Grapeland blistered Latexo, 91-11.

In District 20-3A, the Buffalo Lady Bison have first place all to themselves with a record of 4-0. Teague is second with a 3-1 record. The Frankston Maidens and Teague Lady Lions both have 2-2 records ,the Westwood Lady Panthers sit at 2-2, Groesbeck has posted a 1-2, Crockett is 1-3 and the Lady Elks from Elkhart are 0-2.

League play began on Dec. 11 with three games. Buffalo took Frankston, 53-29; Westwood defeated Teague; and Crockett beat Elkhart, 52-30.

On Dec. 14: Buffalo defeated Westwood 35-25; Teague defeated Crockett, 72-24; and Frankston defeated Groesbeck in a thriller, 48-46.

On Tuesday, Dec. 18: Buffalo took down Crockett, 48-33; Westwood defeated Groesbeck, 56-50; and Teague whipped Elkhart, 73-24.

Three days later on Dec. 21, Frankston held on against Westwood 61-50; Buffalo defeated Elkhart,75-21; and Groesbeck picked up a win over Crockett, 66-36.

Moving to the Class A level in Region IV District 28-A, The La Poynor Lady Flyers lead the way with a 5-0 record. Neches is in second with a 5-1 record and Chireno is in third with a 3-1 mark. Little Centerville sits at 3-2, Oakwood is 1-2 and Kennard is 1-4. Both Apple Springs and Wells have 0-4 records.

The first round of district games was held on Nov. 20. Little Centerville beat Wells, 38-25; Kennard defeated Apple Springs, 33-14; and La Poynor defeated Chireno, 47-40.

On Nov. 27: La Poynor defated Little Centerville, 40-29; Neches took down Oakwood, 72-32; and Chireno defeated Kennard, 59-21.

The Dec. 4 games saw: Chireno defeating Apple Springs, 48-6; Little Centerville defeating Kennard, 33-20; and Neches taking out Wells, 49-19.

On Dec. 11, La Poynor and Little Centerville won.

Dec. 14, Chireno beat Little Centerville, 35-22; Neches defeated Kennard, 49-21 and La Poynor defeated Oakwood, 55-20.

Shortly before Christmas on Dec. 18, La Poynor defeated Wells 46-13; Neches defeated Apple Springs, 52-9; and Oakwood defeated Kennard, 41-39.
