CROCKETT – Like many Americans, former NFL linebacker Eugene Lockhart is coming home for Thanksgiving – and he comes bearing gifts.

The Crockett High School alumnus will be hosting a turkey giveaway Thursday, Nov. 15 at Good Shepherd Fellowship in Crockett between the hours of 3 and 5 p.m.

According to Ruth McKnight, a community member, the event largely caters to Houston County churches who have requested a specific amount of turkeys in advance.

They usually do have some left, and individual people can come over to get them,” McKnight said. “It’s a truckload of turkeys. They have turkeys, turkeys, turkeys.”

Approximately 30 churches are expected to benefit from this year’s giveaway, McKnight said. The turkeys received are then given to church members in need.

He’s been doing this over 20 years,” McKnight said of Lockhart. “It started out just amongst our church – Bethel Baptist Church in Crockett – but it just grew. He just let it grow.”

Lockhart also provides toys to underprivileged children throughout the area at Christmastime and also makes annual donations of money and supplies to Crockett Head Start.

McKnight reiterated that plenty of turkeys will remain after each of the churches picks up their allotted amount.

If you know anybody, just tell them to show up at the church,” McKnight encouraged. “There’s always plenty left.”
