Gracie LaVerne Blackmon

Gracie LaVerne Blackmon of Palestine, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, the 17th day of July, 2018 at the age of 85. She was born on the 31st day of October, 1932 in Grapeland, Texas to William Warner Hughes and Gracie Beatrice Allen Hughes. Ms. Blackmon was a Christian, a fiercely loyal preacher’s wife and a fabulous mother. Not a conversationalist, but a tireless worker. Farming, clearing land and tending to animals were but small tasks compared to honoring and serving the Lord. She was an excellent cook, fiery against injustices but gentle and generous to those in need.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Warner and Gracie Hughes; husband, Marion Thomas (M.T.) Blackmon; a baby girl; son, Mitchel Blackmon; grandchildren, Michael Cox, Jr., Cory Blackmon and brother-in-law, Leroy Blackmon.

Ms. Blackmon will always be alive in the loving hearts of her family. She leaves behind her daughters, Peggy Cox and husband Mike, Rebecca Camacho; sons, George Blackmon and wife Martha, Pat Blackmon and wife Pam, Jerry Blackmon and wife Debbie, Sam Blackmon and wife Marla; twenty grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; sisters, Wanda Blackmon, Margie Cox and husband Paul; brothers, Bill Hughes and wife Shirley, Larry Hughes and wife Wanice; brother-in-law, Mickey Blackmon and wife Laverne.

Please join Ms. Blackmon’s family for a visitation and reception from six o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening on Saturday, the 21st day of July, 2018 in the Reflection Room and Parlor of Rhone Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Gracie LaVerne Blackmon will be conducted at half past two o’clock in the afternoon on Sunday, the 22nd day of July, 2018 in the Rhone Memorial Chapel with Rev. Donald Britton and Bro. Gary Bowman officiating. Interment will follow in Denson Cemetery in Grapeland.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be Matthew Cox, Ryan Blackmon, Jordan Blackmon, Edward Clayton, Jerrod Blackmon and Patrick O’Shea Blackmon. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Blackmon, Ty Whitworth, Ronnie Smith, Zach Burgess and Nathan McDivit.
