James Ray “Jimmy” Bear

James Ray “Jimmy” Bear, 77, passed away on June 12, 2018, at home in Crockett holding the hands of his wife and daughters, with his beloved granddaughters, who call him “Papa,” nearby. Jimmy was born in Crockett on September 25, 1940, and graduated from Crockett High School in 1959, where he was known by his friends as “Poley.” He owned Bear Construction and built or remodeled many houses in Houston County until he went to work for the Crockett State School in 1987, where he made even more lifelong friends. Jimmy lived in Crockett for most of his life, moving to the Austin area for a short time to be near his first grandchild. He and Helen returned to Crockett in 2016 and became members of Central Baptist Church.

Jimmy will be greatly missed by the family he left behind. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen Bear of Crockett; daughters, Rhonda Mates and husband, Sean of Austin, Megan Bear of Crockett; granddaughters, Olivia James of Austin and Emmie Ray of Crockett; sister in law, Faye Currie of Latexo; brother in law, Jerry Patton and wife, Virginia of Latexo; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.  In death, he has been reunited with his mother and father Gladys and Jim Bear; sister, Mary Frances Hobbs, and many other friends and family who have gone before him.

A memorial service for James Ray “Jimmy” Bear will be held at Central Baptist Church at 4:00 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2018, Rev. John Goss, officiating.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church 102 N. 7th St., Crockett, TX. 75835 or Traditions Hospice, 600 E Loop 304, Crockett, TX. 75835.
