Hughie Hix Gray, Sr.

Hughie Hix Gray, Sr., age 84 of Crockett passed away Saturday, May 19, 2018 in the CHI St. Luke’s Hospital in Lufkin. Hughie was born December 11, 1933 in Alvin to parents, Hal Hix Gray and Ollie Mae Shoemake Gray. He served in the U. S. Navy, the U. S. Air Force and the Texas National Guard.  Hughie worked as a carpenter, electrician, wood worker, welder and as a peace officer and also taught hand gun classes for many years. He was a member of the Grapeland Masonic Lodge #473, the International Order of Oddfellows and also a member and deacon of the Ephesus Missionary Baptist Church.

Hughie is survived by wife, Jo Ann Gray of Crockett; son, Hugh Gray, Jr. of Alvin; daughter, Vicki Payne of Conroe; granddaughter, Karen Tucker; great-grandchildren, David Morrissey III, Joseph Tucker V; sisters, Nancy Skalicky and husband, Joe of Crockett, Nellie Yarbrough of Santa Fe, Sue Evans of Houston County Lake; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by parents, Hal Hix Gray and Ollie Mae Shoemake Gray; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lulu Mae and Davis Graham, Ruth Shoemake, Zane Yarbrough, Slim Evans; multiple nieces, nephews and other family members.

Memorial services for Hughie Hix Gray were held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2018 at the Ephesus Missionary Baptist Church. Arrangements were under the direction of Callaway-Allee Funeral Home.
