DOGWOOD TRAILS THIRD WEEKEND: Taste of Palestine, Business Expo set Thursday

PALESTINE – The upcoming weekend looks to be a busy one for the city of Palestine as the final weekend of the 80th Annual Dogwood Trails Festival gets underway.

First on the agenda is the annual Taste of Palestine and Business Expo, hosted by the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce and scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Thursday, April 5.

“This is the best night to eat out in Palestine,” said Stephanie Wright, Member Services Director for the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce. “Taste a variety of local restaurants and caterers, play games, see demos and get samples from local businesses.”

Those who are of age will also have the opportunity to enjoy “adult” beverages provided by Ben E. Keith Beverages.

Contests will be held to determine which participant is worthy of the titles of Best Dessert, Best Entree and Best Presentation.

“Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door,” Wright explained, adding that ticket purchases may be made at the Chamber.

According to information provided by Meagan Miller, Financial Administrator for the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce, participants in Taste of Palestine include the following: Catering Plus, Contemporary Catering, Cotton Patch, Jocelyn’s Donuts, Michael’s Fine Dining, Palestine Regional Medical Center, Pint and Barrel Drafthouse, Ocean’s Bakery, Red Fire Grille and Whataburger.

The Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce is located at 401 W. Main St. in Palestine.

Campsite reservations at the Ivy Payne Wildlife Refuge by the Texas Land Conservancy (TLC) are available from Friday, April 6 through Sunday, April 8.

Those who reserve a campsite will have the opportunity to enjoy breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings, as well as s’mores and a campfire Saturday night.

Reservations are $15 for TLC members and $30 for non-members. All campers must provide their own bedding, tents, transportation and other necessities.

Free guided hikes are scheduled to take place at the refuge Saturday, April 7 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Sunday, April 8 at 10 a.m.

The Ivy Payne Wildlife Refuge is located approximately 20 miles south of Palestine at the end of ACR 134.

Palestine Community Theatre will present ‘Little Shop of Horrors:  The Musical’ April 6-8 with performances beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Historic Texas Theatre. A complementary reception will be held Friday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Ticket are $15 per adult and $10 for children ages four to 18. Purchases may be made in advance at Blake Furniture, Discount Pools, the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce and the Palestine Visitors Center.

Other events taking place during the festival’s final weekend include tours of the Redlands Historic Inn.

Historic tours of the building will take place Friday and Saturday, April 6-7 at 11 a.m. with architectural tours following at 2 p.m. All tours are guided and approximately 30 minutes in duration. Light refreshments will be provided to those taking the tour.

The Palestine Farmers Market will be hosting a Market Madness event Saturday, April 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The Palestine Farmers Market is a venue where agriculturalists, artists, bakers and creative vendors bring the community together while showcasing local unique, crafty and gardening talent,” explained Danielle Shultz, Project Manager for the City of Palestine. “This is the only event at the Palestine Farmers Market that allows direct sellers to join the excitement.”

According to Shultz, 31 Gifts, Jafra, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, Paparazzi, Perfectly Posh, Pink Zebra and Young Living are among the companies which will be participating in the event.
