Bobby Sam Harkins, age 85, of Crockett passed away Saturday, March 24, 2018 in New Braunfels. Bobby Sam was born December 4, 1932 in Kennard to parents, Mike and Hazel Harkins.

He graduated from Groveton High School in 1951 where he play quarterback for the Groveton Indians in 1949 and 1950.

He graduated from Sam Houston State College in 1958 then served in the United States Army receiving the National Defense Medal and an honorable discharge. Bobby Sam worked from many years with the Natural Resource Conservation Service where he retired. In his lifetime, he was a member and served in many organizations including being a lifetime member of the Groveton Ex-Student Association, the Sam Houston University Ex-Students, and the Elks Lodge. Also, he served as a football official for the Texas High School Football, East Texas Chapter for 20-plus years. Serving for 39 years on the Go Texan Committee and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, he was voted as The Winner’s Circle of the Barbeque Cookoff three times also in 1982 First Place and Second Place. Bobby Sam opened H & G Catering Business and made quite a name for himself in the cooking business becoming a self-taught “Cooking Extraordinaire.”

Bobby Sam is survived by his family, Enda Lou Jackson, Jett and Kate Jackson of San Antonio, Perri and Piper Jackson of New Braunfels, Annette Hull of Pasadena, Amy and Dean Jackson of San Antonio, Casey and Joe Jackson of New Braunfels, Craig Henderson of Pasadena, Dean and Nancy Henderson of Pasadena, Greg Simon of Crockett, Joe Ned Dean of Groveton, Bailey and Wade Reives of Houston, Dustin and Blair Henderson of Houston.

A celebration of life for Bobby Sam Harkins was held 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2018 in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel. Interment followed in the Corinth Cemetery. Family received friends for visitation Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
