Mary Lou Swearingin Skidmore

Services for Mary Lou Swearingin Skidmore, age 88, of Grapeland, Texas; was held at the Bailey & Foster Funeral Chapel in Grapeland, on Saturday, March 24, 2018; at 10 a.m., with Carl Allen and Lehn Lediker officiating. The burial followed in Davis Cemetery. The viewing was held Friday evening 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bailey & Foster Chapel in Grapeland. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bailey & Foster Funeral Home.

Mary Lou Skidmore was born August 26, 1929; in Coleman, Texas; to Jasper Guy Swearingin and Susan Jane Cheairs Swearingin. She grew up in Austonio and married William Hoyt Skidmore of Grapeland. They enjoyed 69 years together, most of that time they resided in Grapeland. They were lifetime members of the Church of Christ.

Mary Lou went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 7 p.m., on March 18, 2018. She was rejoined with her husband, William Hoyt Skidmore, and son David Hoyt Skidmore, who preceded her on this journey. Also preceding her were her father Guy and mother Susan Swearingin, her brothers Johnny Jasper Swearingin, George Elmer Swearingin, and sister Ellen Roberts.

She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Lynn Rains, and husband Tommy, and Valory Jean Elliott, and husband James, also her son Stephen Michael Skidmore, and wife Vanessa, and daughter-in-law Esther Skidmore, wife of David. She leaves 10 grandchildren: William Yates, Guy Yates, Loudana Elliott, Lorie Santangelo, Leah Scott, Earl Jay Elliott, Tiffany Yeates, Misty Clifford, Clayton Skidmore, and Jessica Skidmore. She also has numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sisters Irene Patrick, Elouise Ray, and Amanda Christian, and her husband Jerry, and a host of nieces and nephews. Mary Lou loved all her family very much.

Mary Lou served many years as a Registered Nurse caring for her patients in the Houston County area. She enjoyed helping others. She also enjoyed painting and music, and especially loved the songs her husband wrote and his steel guitar music. The song she loved to hear him play most was Lily Dale. She is happy now.

Pallbearers will be Ty Yates, Travis Yates, Trenten Yates, Jacob Elliott, McClain Yeates, and Clayton Skidmore. Honorary pallbearers will be William Yates, Guy Yates and Jay Elliott.
