THE WEEKENDER: Public School System

By Clyde Black

As another part of the series on school shootings, I’m focusing this week on the public school system and some things that might need to change within that system.

I’m a simple man, but it seems to me that schools are places where children are sent by parents to get an education.

To me, that means instruction in math, science, history, English, etc. and etc. Schools are to be places of learning.

Unfortunately, schools don’t always get to pick and choose which kids get to attend. Actually, it’s financially important to the public schools to keep kids in the school and on the rolls.

I have over 50 years of law enforcement experience and have taught criminal justice all over the Houston School District as part of the HPD crime prevention division. We had narrated programs by newsman Ron Stone that took into the schools to teach the little buggers. About half the time, we were sabotaged by liberal teachers who simply wanted to teach the little folks their brand of socialism.

Here is the point. Schools should teach, and when deviant behavior occurs at the school, the police should be called, and the brat should be introduced to the corrections part of the criminal justice system. Teachers are not cops and can’t take it upon themselves to decide when to call law enforcement. If a kid is threatening other kids or teachers, that is a crime. Call the police instead of trying to deal with the situation unofficially. Teachers and schools don’t get to decide which laws to enforce. Young deviants are not held accountable, and there are no consequences for their behavior. It may come as a big surprise to some educators, but a teacher or coach is not a security officer.

Almost all of the attacks we are discussing happened in gun free zones. Public schools where guns are prohibited. That’s where the bad guys go to find easy victims. We must harden those targets.

Schools must provide safety for the children. Very visible security is available through means like I mentioned previously. Civic and religious organizations would be glad to patrol and help provide more security on the campuses.

To my dear and precious educator friends, please note. If my child was forced by you to sit in class with a bully who you failed to report to the police and that bully somehow hurt my kid, you should know that whatever harm befalls my kid will probably be imparted to you. You are responsible for the safety of my child while in your care!

Lord, please help us.
