HORACE MCQUEEN: Stupidity – or is it ignorance?

Where are the parents of students who have problems at school? Whether being “bullied” on social media, trouble with math or history or just having difficulty making friends, every youngster has concerns. Biggest problem — as I see it — is that the parents are so darn busy with their texting, Facebook and other “social media” that they don’t talk to their kids. If they did, the school killings in recent days might have been stopped before the nut cases opened fire. Too many parents don’t communicate — with their spouse – or their offspring.

A couple months ago, my wife and I were eating in a top notch restaurant and noticed a couple, with two kids, at the adjoining table. During their meal, not a darn word was spoken. The parents, and the kids, spent their time with their fancy phones “communicating” with others. Unspoken was a discussion about their day, progress in school, talk about their friends and their problems. Those two “adults” should have never had kids — they proved unqualified for parenthood!

Now to farm stuff! Weeds are coming — so be ready. Lots of products are on the market to get the unwanted plants before they overrun pastures and hay meadows. The county Extension office has plenty of free information for producers who need herbicides that will work on their farm and the particular weed problem. There is no chemical that is all encompassing — and be wary of folks who claim their products are 100 percent effective against all weeds.

Politically, we have some choices to make, and very soon. As I see it, two of the most significant races for state offices are for commissioner of the General Land Office and Texas Dept. of Agriculture. George P. Bush, an aspiring weak branch of the Bush dynasty, has flat screwed up the General Land Office by his meddling in the operation of that agency. Let’s send George P. back to his home in Florida and return Jerry Patterson as head of the land office. As for Agriculture Commissioner, anyone but Sid Miller would be a welcome addition to that office. Turn Miller out to pasture and TDA and the taxpayers will be lots better off.
