GRAPELAND – The Grapeland Sandies welcomed the Centerville Tigers to town last Friday, Jan. 19 for a District 20-AA contest.

The Sandies were looking to move to 3-0 in league play and the Tigers offered little in the way of resistance as Grapeland crushed Centerville by a final score of 63-31.

The Sandies opened the game on a 15-2, finished the first quarter up by 16 and never looked back. Deco Bryant hit a pair of threes in the opening quarter to pace the home team. Rick Frauenberger added four, Keizion Ashford and BJ Howard both had three while Keriaun Davis along with Tyrin Wiley both had two to stake the Sandies to a 20-4 lead.

Centerville’s first quarter points came from CJ Denman with four.

The Tigers’ offense began to show a little life in the second quarter as they tripled their output from the first period of play. Hunter Free got in the books with seven points, while Cameron Williams had three and Coleman Robinson had two.

Josh “Bear” Ashford Ackley led the way for Grapeland in the second period with five points. He was joined by Davis and Brayden Cheatham with four apiece while Ashford added a pair of free throws to make the halftime score 35-16, in favor of the Sandies.

Following the break, Grapeland’s Javion Joseph caught fire and dominated the third quarter. Joseph was a beast on both ends of the court as he picked up three steals, pulled down a pair of rebounds and dropped in nine points.

Joseph was joined in the Sandies’ scoring column by Ackley, Bryant and Wiley – all with three – along with Ashford who made one of two from the line.

Free led the Centerville attack with a pair of three-pointers. Connor Cox added four and Jordan Cannon added a free throw to close out the quarter with the Sandies ahead 54-27.

With eight minutes remaining in the game and a 27-point lead the Sandies slowed the tempo down on the offensive end, but kept the Tigers stymied on the defensive side of the court. Centerville only managed four points in the final frame on twos from Cannon and Bill Miller.

The Grapeland fourth quarter points came from Howard with three and a triad of Sandies – Frauenberger, Davis and Wiley – all with two.

For the game, the Tigers were led in scoring by Hunter Free with 13 points. Connor Cox and CJ Denman each had four while Jordan Cannon and Cameron Williams both had three. Bill Miller and Coleman Robinson both had two.

The Sandies were led Deco Bryant and Javion Joseph with nine points apiece. Josh “Bear” Ackley and Keriaun Davis both dropped in eight while Tyrin Wiley had seven. Keizion Ashford, Rick Frauenberger and BJ Howard all had six and Brayden Cheatham closed out the Grapeland scoring with four.
