Area Boys Compete in Elkhart Invitational Powerlifting Meet

ELKHART – The Elkhart Invitational Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) Meet was held in Elkhart on Saturday, Jan. 13 and several of the area lifters fared very well in the first meet of 2018. There were 86 lifters from 11 area schools at the event. The schools represented were: Buffalo; Cayuga; Center; Elkhart; Frankston; Grapeland; Malakoff; Mount Enterprise; Rusk; Trinity; and Westwood.

The team from Trinity powered their way to first place with a total of 38 points with three first place lifters, two second place, two thirds and a fifth place lifter. The meet was scored based on a combination of bench press, dead lift and squat. Seven points were awarded for first place, five points for second three points for third, two points for fourth and one point for fifth.

While the Tigers far out-pointed the competition, the order of finish tightened up between the remaining places. Frankston finished second with 28 points, Elkhart was in third with 26, Malakoff finished fourth with 17 and Buffalo finished fifth with 15. Cayuga finished in sixth place with 14 points while Rusk and Grapeland finished seventh and eighth with 12 points each. Rusk was awarded seventh place based on THSPA formulas. Center finished ninth with nine points, Westwood was 10th with six points and Mount Enterprise was 11th with two points.

Buffalo’s Logan Shaw finished first in the 114 pound class with a total of 580 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 235 pounds in the squat, 140 on the bench and 205 in the dead lift. Trinity’s Rojae Kizzee finished second with a total of 425 pounds lifted and Cayuga’s Caden Mullican Logan Shaw was third with a total of 405 pounds.

In the 123 pound class, Malakoff Tiger Chandler Prinka finished first with a total of 835 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 310 pounds in the squat, 180 on the bench and 345 in the dead lift. Frankston’s Coleman Hardin finished second with a total of 790 pounds lifted and Grapeland’s Mark Hanna was third with a total of 615 pounds.

In the 132 pound class, Trinity Tiger Aundrea Holmes finished first with a total of 975 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 415 pounds in the squat, 185 on the bench and 220 in the dead lift. Frankston’s Cameron Stepp finished second with a total of 525.

In the 148 pound class, Cayuga Wildcat Kyle Kennerick finished first with a total of 815 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 325 pounds in the squat, 165 on the bench and 325 in the dead lift. Frankston’s JJ Beckfield finished second with a total of 785 pounds lifted and Frankston’s Noble Giles was third with a total of 770.

In the 165 pound class, Trinity Tiger Parker Hay finished first with a total of 1300 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 500 pounds in the squat, 320 on the bench and 480 in the dead lift. Westwood’s Zach Morrow finished second with a total of 1070 pounds lifted and Buffalo’s John Vaughn was third with a total of 960. Grapeland’s Bryan Perez was seventh with a total of 800 while teammate Jay Shepherd was eighth with a total of 790.

In the 181 pound class, Elkhart Elk Ryan Lindsay finished first with a total of 1355 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 545 pounds in the squat, 285 on the bench and 525 in the dead lift. Elkhart’s Michael Jones finished second with a total of 1330 pounds lifted and Rusk’s Byron Johnson was third with a total of 1105. Elkhart’s Blake Szabo finished 11th with a total of 675 and Grapeland’s Jayden Rodenmaker was 12th with 660 pounds.

In the 198 pound class, Center Rough Rider Witt Dockens finished first with a total of 1400 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 575 pounds in the squat, 335 on the bench and 490 in the dead lift. Buffalo’s Hector Dominguez was second with a total of 1260 pounds lifted and Trinity’s Sebastian Maldonado was third with a total of 1245. Elkhart’s Michael Agan was fourth was a total of 1240 and Westwood’s Lajuan Davis McClain was sixth with 1030 pounds.

In the 220 pound class, Trinity Tiger Brandon Phillips finished first with a total of 1235 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 475 pounds in the squat, 330 on the bench and 430 in the dead lift. Malakoff’s Caleb Adams finished second with a total of 1185 pounds lifted and Trinity’s Garrett King was third with a total of 1150. Grapeland’s Ashton Henry was fourth with a total of 1140. Grapeland’s Aaron Davis was seventh with a total of 1100 while teammate Cerdarian Davis was 10th with a total lift of 1050 pounds.  Elkhart’s Raul Cazares was 14th with 775 pounds.

In the 242 pound class, Elkhart Elk TJ Jones finished first with a total of 1475 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 575 pounds in the squat, 360 on the bench and 540 in the dead lift. Trinity’s Devorriay Anderson finished second with a total of 1110 pounds lifted and Elkhart’s Weldon Brooks was third with a total of 1025. Cayuga’s Tristan Legard was fourth with a total lift of 900 pounds.

In the 275 pound class, Rusk Eagle Jermaine Lewis finished first with a total of 1365 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 550 pounds in the squat, 265 on the bench and 550 in the dead lift. Frankston’s Jesse Owens was second with a total lift of 1335 and Malakoff’s Lincoln Rogers was third with a total of 1185. Elkhart’s Seth Hoffman was fourth with a total lift of 1165 and Grapeland’s Franco Rea was eighth with a lift of 1065.

In the super heavyweight class, Grapeland Sandie Jacob Barbosa finished first with a total of 940 pounds lifted. He recorded lifts of 370 pounds in the squat, 220 on the bench and 350 in the dead lift. Frankston’s Corey Jackson was second with a total lift of 785 pounds.
