GRAPELAND – Santa Claus came a few days earlier than expected for approximately 80 faculty and staff members at Grapeland ISD.

During a meeting of the Grapeland ISD Board of Trustees held on Monday, Dec. 18, the GISD board unanimously approved a proposal from Superintendent Don Jackson for a little over $30,000.00 in stipends for district employees.

“We wanted to essentially put our money where our mouth was in appreciation for all of our staff members and show our gratitude,” GISD Superintendent Don Jackson said.

The superintendent explained professional employees received $500 while all other staff members received $250.

“Our Finance Director – Bonnie Hooper – does a great job of keeping us financially sound,” Jackson added. “She willingly found the funds to appropriate and show our appreciation towards for our staff. The funds cannot be called a bonus, but after checking with our financial auditors, we were able to give a stipend based on retaining our teachers.”

“Retainment is one of the focal points of our State Commissioner of Education, Mike Morath, and we were pleased to be able to offer it. Educators are usually not in education for the money, but we all know that every little bit helps,” Jackson concluded.
