UIL Begins Realignment, Reclassification Process

EAST TEXAS – On Wednesday, Dec. 6, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) released the conference cutoff numbers and preliminary enrollment figures for the 2018-2020 reclassification and realignment. The conference cutoff numbers provide the range of enrollment for each of the six conferences (1A – 6A), including divisional cutoffs for football.

According to a statement from the UIL, the preliminary enrollment figures were released “… to increase transparency and provide for additional verification of enrollment figures. These figures were submitted by school districts based on enrollment on Oct. 27. The 2018-20 alignments will be released Feb. 1 for football and basketball. District alignments for other activities will be released in the order of their seasons.”

The cutoff numbers established by the UIL are as follows: Class 6A -2190 students and above; Class 5A – between 1150 and 2189 students; Class 4A – between 505 and 1149 students; Class 3A – between 225 and 504 students; Class 2A – between 105 and 224 students; and Class 1A – 104.9 students and below.

The divisional cutoffs for football are as follows:

  • Class 1A Division I: 55.5 – 104.9; 1A Division II: 55 and below
  • Class 2A Division I: 161.5 – 224; 2A Division II: 105 – 161.4
  • Class 3A Division I: 335 – 504; 3A Division II: 225 – 334
  • Class 4A Division I: 790 – 1149; 4A Division II: 505 – 789
  • Class 5A Division I: 1840 – 2189; 5A Division II: 1150 – 1839

Based on the preliminary enrollment figures, the school district classifications in Houston County will show Crockett ISD as a 3A DI school with an enrollment of 363. Grapeland ISD will remain as a 2A DII school with an enrollment of 141. Lovelady ISD will drop from a 2A DI to a 2A DII school with an enrollment of 154. Latexo ISD will remain as a 2A district with an enrollment of 140 while Kennard ISD will be classified as a 1A district with an enrollment of 77.

In Anderson County, the districts classifications indicate Palestine ISD will be a 4A DI school with an enrollment of 965. Elkhart ISD will be classified as a 3A DI school with an enrollment of 383. Frankston ISD will be classified as a 3A DII school with an enrollment of 249. Westwood ISD will be considered as a Class 3A DI school with an enrollment of 425. Cayuga will be considered as a 2A DI district with an enrollment of 168. Slocum ISD will move up to the Class 2A level with an enrollment of 114 while Neches ISD will drop to the Class 1A level, with an enrollment of 101.

In other area districts of note, Madisonville CISD will be classified as a Class 4A DII school with an enrollment of 668. Trinity ISD will be classified as a Class 3A DI school with an enrollment of 369. Alto ISD will be classified as a Class 2A DI school with an enrollment of 200. Groveton ISD will be classified as a Class 2A DI school with an enrollment of 222. Centerville ISD will be classified as a Class 2A DI school with an enrollment of 208 and Oakwood ISD will be classified as a Class 1A DII school with an enrollment of 54.
