SLOCUM – Some games you have the “it” factor working in your favor and other games you don’t. On Saturday, Nov. 18, the Slocum Lady Mustangs didn’t have “it” as they took on the Woden Lady Eagles in the championship game of the Slocum High School Basketball Tournament.

It wasn’t as if the Lady Mustangs were out hustled or out executed, Slocum’s shots simply wouldn’t fall and the team was uncharacteristically turnover prone. Make no mistake, it’s not that the Lady Eagles are some chump team picked to fill a bracket spot, Woden is currently ranked as the number three team in the TABC Class 2A poll.

All of these factors came together on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Mustangs fell to the Lady Eagles by a final score of 63-37.

As the first quarter got underway, Woden raced out to a 17-10 lead and never looked back. Lady Eagle Meagan Johnson led Woden in scoring during the first eight minutes of play with eight points. Megan Wilson and Reese Taylor both knocked down a three, while Britney Thompson canned a pair of free throws and Shelby Johnson chipped in a point.

The Lady Mustangs were led by Jessi Ives with six points while both Taylor Clark and Jordan Wickersham added two apiece.

In the second quarter, Woden opened up a double digit as Thompson poured in 17 points. Taylor connected on a three ball and both Brookshire and Johnson had two.

For Slocum, Ives had four while both Clark and Shelby Bowman knocked shots from behind the arc to make the score 41-20 at the half.

After the break, Slocum went ice cold from the field as Ives was the only Lady Mustang to score (she had six).

For Woden, Taylor hit her third three of the game as both Brookshire and Johnson had two. Thompson made one of two from the line to close out the third quarter with the Lady Eagles ahead by a score of 49-26.

With a 23 point lead and eight minutes left to play, the Lady Eagles milked the clock for all it was worth. Johnson scored 10 as both Brookshire and Taylor netted two as Woden won the championship game by a final score of 63-37.

The Lady Mustangs were led by Ives with five, Clark with four and Briley Evers with two.

For the game, Slocum was led by Jessi Ives with 21 points. Taylor Clark dropped in nine, Shelby Bowman hit a three and both Briley Evers and Jaiden Wickersham scored two.

Woden was led by Meagan Johnson with a game-high 22 and Britney Thompson with 20 points. Reece Taylor had 11, Shelby Brookshire had seven and Megan Wilson connected with a three-pointer.
