FORESTRY UPDATE by Gary Allen Burns 7-6

While East Texas forests only cover less than a third of the state, timber is an important industry in Texas.

More than 11 million acres is privately owned, and in 2014 the total economic impact of the forest sector exceeded $30 billion and it supported nearly 140,000 jobs. In addition to the East Texas forest, Central and West Texas have a total of 49.7 million acres of forests, almost 95 percent being privately owned.
