**UPDATED**Grapeland Teen Killed in Collision

 GRAPELAND – On Wednesday, June 28, a teen bicyclist was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler as he attempted to cross U.S. Highway 287 in Grapeland.

According to information provided by the Grapeland Police Department, at approximately, 5:15 p.m. August “Gus” Kennon, 16, was attempting to cross the highway at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 287 S and FM 2423. The teen was on a bicycle, traveling from west to east when the tractor-trailer crashed into him.

Grapeland EMS crews were on location within minutes and treated Kennon at the scene. He was transported by ambulance to a helipad located in Grapeland and was in the process of being airlifted to an area hospital when he passed away from his injuries.

Kennon was the son of Josh Kennon and Lorrie Mars and a student at Grapeland High School. The youngest of four brothers, Kennon was known as a friendly, well-liked, active member of the Grapeland High School Band.

A community wide service will be held on Sunday, July 2 to honor the memories of GISD Band Director Perry Frank and GHS Student Gus Kennon.  The service will be held at Sandie Stadium in Grapeland and will start at 6:30 p.m.
