Ed James Smart, age 84, of Grapeland, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017 at his residence. He was born November 30, 1932 in Premont, Texas to parents, James Edward Smart and Melinda Jane Ivy Smart. He worked numerous years in the oil industry; owned his own business for eight years, tried retiring but wasn’t happy so he went to work for the State of Texas, finally retiring at the age of 78 from Mission Tejas State Park.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lillie Smart of Grapeland; children, Edward James Smart and wife, Robbi of Houston, Neil Smart and wife, Christi of Palestine, Kathryn McKee of Nacogdoches and Cheryl Phelps and husband, Darrell of Corpus Christi; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other loving relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Jane Smart; and thirteen brothers and sisters.

Memorial services for Ed James Smart will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 10 a.m. in the Liberty Hill Church with Bro. Roger B. Craiker officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Allee Funeral Home.
