GRAPELAND – Local elementary-aged children are invited to participate in an art contest and have their drawings and paintings displayed during the Grapeland Farmer’s Market on Saturday, May 20.

This is an opportunity to let the kids showcase their creativity,” Grapeland Public Library Librarian Ashley Corns told the Messenger Thursday. “It can be anything – a drawing or painting. It can be of a car, truck, cow, whatever they want to draw.”

The Farmer’s Market Art Contest is sponsored by the Grapeland Chamber of Commerce and Capital Farm Credit.

The art will be on display during the Grapeland Farmer’s Market, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.. Saturday, May 20 at the Grapeland Public Library, located at 212 N. Oak St. in Grapeland.

“The art will be judged by the public. What we are going to do is clip it to a clothes line so they can be voted on,” Corns said. “Every print will have a number. We will have a bucket for them to drop their votes in.”

Art will be divided into the following categories: Pre-kindergarten to first grade; and second to fifth grade. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each age category.

The winners will be announced at 12:30 p.m. May 20 during the event.

All art must be turned in by Thursday, May 18 to Grapeland Elementary School secretary Kristi Streetman or at the library.
