GISD Seeks to Become District of Innovation

By Will Johnson Messenger Reporter GRAPELAND – When the Grapeland ISD Board of Trustees convenes its monthly meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m., the school board members will be asked to consider giving their approval to a “District of Innovation” resolution. “Becoming a District of Innovation will give Grapeland ISD more local control and allows the district more flexibility to implement programs and procedures that best fit the needs of our students, staff, parents and community,” GISD Superintendent Gregg Spivey said when asked what that means for the district. He added it would give GISD more local...

Step Right Up – Free Money for All!

By Will Johnson Messenger Reporter CROCKETT – With the ongoing discussions of how to best “fix” the public school system in Texas by Texas lawmakers, one area which has received more than its fair share of attention is the voucher system. It’s simple, if Grapeland wins on Friday they are the District 20-2A champs, regardless of the outcome of their regular season finale against the Groveton Indians on Valentine’s Day. As the game got underway on Tuesday, Grapeland raced...

Lady Dawgs Fetch District 21-3A Championship

By Will Johnson Messenger Reporter  ANDERSON – While it wasn’t their best game of the season, the Crockett Lady Bulldogs did just enough to win and bring home the District 21-3A Championship after their 54-42 defeat of the Anderson-Shiro Lady Owls. Crockett came out flat in the first quarter and only posted 10 points in the game’s opening eight minutes. Katelin Holmes and Dea’Junique James both put up four points while Mercedes James accounted for the other two. Fortunately for the Lady Dawgs, the Lady Owls also had trouble getting off the ground and only managed to post seven...
