Paul Hamerton Estachy

Paul Hamerton Estachy, 88, of Centerville, passed away Friday, February 17, 2017 at his Leon County ranch home. He was born August 29, 1928, in Port Washington, NY. Paul was a Golden Glove boxer and a football center for Tulane University where he graduated with an engineering degree. He spoke four languages: English, French, Spanish, & German and went to work for the French Line in New York & Paris. From 1952- 1997 he continued his stevedoring career with Southern Stevedoring Company in Houston. For many years, he served as a Trustee of the Maritime Association, Pension, Vacation and Welfare Fund, managed the Galveston Container Terminal and chaired the West Gulf Maritime Association Labor Committee, assisting in contract negotiations from New York to Brownsville. Paul was an avid hunter throughout Texas & Louisiana.

In 1998, he “retired” to work fulltime on his ranch but continued stevedore consulting work through 2015. His tenacity, fortitude, never quit attitude along with his unusual strength made him quite a character of distinction.

His oncologist, Dr. Marc Usery, commented there should be a new verb added to the dictionary-“Estachy”. He leaves us with such a great legacy.

Survivors include daughters, Suzanne Smith and husband, Doyce of Shreveport, LA, Denise Estachy and husband, Pete Moreno of Round Rock, Linda Sands Cantu of Centerville; grandchildren, Micah Smith and wife, Angie of Jupiter, FL, Matthew Smith and wife, Mindy of Broken Arrow, OK, Anna Sharpe and Jace Leffler of Tulsa, OK, Sheilah Triplett and husband, Carl of Creek; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; special nieces and nephews, Bill Metzroth and wife, Karen of Lake Jackson, Charles Metzroth of Houston, and Eva Owen and husband, Mark of Pataskala, OH; sister, Katharine Amsler of Swickley, Pa; brother, Michel Estachy of Paris, France; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Paul was preceded in death by parents, Capt. Robert and Nesta Estachy; wife, Edith Nettles Estachy; son, Robert Georges Estachy.

Funeral service for Paul Hamerton Estachy were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 20, 2017 at Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with Pastor Doyce Smith officiating. Family received friends for visitation at 1 p.m. prior to the service. He was laid rest in the Creek Cemetery beside is beloved wife, Edith.
