John Melvin Gardner

John Melvin Gardner, age 84, of Pennington, formerly of Corrigan, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017 in the Crockett Community Care Center.

John was born October 12, 1932 in Hicksbaugh, TX to parents, Ben Gardner and Tallie  Chesie “Pete” Wright Gardner.

He graduated from Corrigan High School in 1950 and later graduated from the Naval Academy in 1953.

John was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean War and while serving in the Navy, he won two world championships in the International Softball World Tournament.

After serving his country, he went on to play Fast Pitch Softball for the Lufkin Dirty Socks in 1955.

John was an Evangelical Minister of the Full Gospel faith.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Gardner of Pennington; children, Lois Gardner of Bastrop, Janet Weiss of LaGrange, John Michael Gardner of Pennington, Ben and Melinda Gardner of Pennington, Bo and Shawna Gardner of Crockett; grandchildren, Brandon and Christina Gardner, Wyatt Gardner, Margaret Gardner all of Pennington, Lincoln Smith and Landon Gardner of Crockett,  Todd Hendrick, Reid Jenkins, Ryan Jenkins all of Austin, Coleman Weiss and Addison Weiss of LaGrange. John was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Pete Gardner.

Family received friends for visitation Tuesday evening, February 7, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m at the Callaway-Allee Funeral Home.
