 HOUSTON COUNTY – Playoffs? Don’t talk to me about playoffs? Are you kidding me? The immortal words of Jim Mora live on and yes, it’s time for the playoffs.

While Coach Mora was talking about the NFL playoffs, make no mistake, the passion displayed by area fans as they cheer on their favorite teams during the high school basketball playoffs is equal to, if not more intense, than the NFL. Thank God the sale of alcohol at UIL sporting events is prohibited!

At the Class 3A level, the Crockett Lady Bulldogs have clinched at least a share of the District 21-3A crown. The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Coldspring-Oakhurst Lady Trojans by a score of 61-44 on Tuesday, Jan. 31 and had a bye on Friday, Feb. 3. A win against the Anderson-Shiro Lady Owls on Tuesday, Feb. 7 and the Lady Bulldogs will be the outright champs. A loss against the 1-10 Lady Owls will knock Crockett into a first place tie with the New Waverly Lady Bulldogs. Expect Crockett to take care of business on Tuesday and bring home the district championship.

Projected order of finish: 1) Crockett 2) New Waverly 3) Coldpsring- Oakhurst 4) Onalaska.

Based on the expected order of finish, – if the postseason was to start today – Crockett would face the fourth place team from District 22-3A in the first round of the playoffs. The Hemphill Lady Hornets are currently projected to be the Lady Bulldogs’ Bi-District opponents.

At the Class 2A level, the Grapeland Sandiettes have clinched either first or second place in District 20-2A. As of Tuesday, Feb. 7, Grapeland and the Centerville Lady Tigers sit atop the standings at 8-1. The two teams squared off on Tuesday evening for the championship but as of press time, the score was unavailable.

The Lovelady Lions are in third place in district and will enter the playoffs as the third seed from District 20-2A, regardless of the outcome of Tuesday’s game against Big Sandy Lady Wildcats.

Projected order of finish: 1) Grapeland 2) Centerville 3) Lovelady 4) Big Sandy

Based on the expected order of finish – if the postseason was to start today – Grapeland would face would face the fourth place team from District 19-2A in the first round of the playoffs. The Cayuga Lady Wildcats are currently projected to be the Sandiettes’ Bi-District opponents.

The Lovelady Lady Lions are slotted to take on the second place team from District 19-2A, projected to be the Italy Lady Gladiators.

At the Class 1A level, the Kennard Lady Tigers are projected to enter the 2017 playoffs as the number three seed from District 28-1A.

Projected order of finish: 1) Apple Springs 2) Martinsville 3) Kennard 4) Wells

Based on the expected order of finish – if the postseason was to start today – Kennard would face would face the second place team from District 27-1A in the first round of the playoffs.
