 HOUSTON COUNTY – After this week, all the Houston County teams will have passed the mid-point of district play and will have just a few regular season games before the playoffs begin.

At the Class 3A level, the Crockett Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker to the Hempstead Bobcats on Tuesday, Jan. 17 as they came back from 20 points down in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to a single basket before they fell by a score of 79-72. The Dawgs were able to bounce back against the Onalaska Bulldogs on Friday, Jan. 20 and won by a final score of 72-69.

The win keeps Crockett in second place tie with the New Waverly Bulldogs. Crockett hosted New Waverly on Tuesday, Jan. 24 but as of press time the score was unavailable.

The Crockett Lady Bulldogs defeated the Hempstead Lady Bobcats on Tuesday, Jan. 17 by a score of 67-37. They also defeated the Onalaska Lady Bulldogs on Friday, Jan. 20 by a score of 46-27.

With the win over Onalaska, Crockett remains tied with New Waverly atop the District 21-3A standings. New Waverly defeated Crockett the last time the girls met by a score of 55-47. The Lady Bulldogs hosted the New Waverly Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday, Jan. 24 but as of press time the score was unavailable.

Moving to the 2A level, the boys are nearing the midway point of the district season and a familiar face site atop the District 20-2A standings. The Grapeland Sandies took on the Latexo Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 17 and hammered them by a score of 74-25. The Sandies traveled to Centerville on Friday, Jan. 20 to take on the Tigers and demolished them by a score of 71-31. Grapeland took on the Big Sandy Wildcats on Tuesday, Jan. 24 but as of press time the score was unavailable.

The Sandiettes kept rolling along with a 75-27 win over the Latexo Lay Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 17 and followed that up with a thrilling 53-49 OT win over the Centerville Lady Tigers on Friday, Jan. 20.

The win gives the Sandiettes sole possession of first place at the halfway mark of district play. The Sandiettes traveled to Big Sandy on Tuesday, Jan. 24, for a game against the Lady Wildcats, but as of press time the score was unavailable.

The Latexo Tigers traveled to Grapeland on Tuesday for a game against the Sandies and lost by a score of 74-25. The Tigers also lost to the Groveton Indians on Friday, Jan. 20 by a final score of 69-58.

The Lady Tigers lost a lopsided game to the Grapeland Sandiettes on Tuesday, Jan. 17 but showed their resiliency by bouncing back to defeat the Groveton Lady Indians by a score of 48-38 on Jan. 20.  Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers welcomed the Centerville Tigers to the Tiger Cage in Latexo on Tuesday, Jan. 24, but as of press time, the scores were unavailable.

The week started off on a positive note for the Lovelady Lions as they defeated the Centerville Tigers by a final score of 74-58. The Lions, unfortunately, ran into the Big Sandy Wildcats in their next game and Big Sandy showed they still have a little juice from last year’s state semi-finalist team. The Wildcats defeated the Lions by a score of 85-67 to set up a showdown with the Grapeland Sandies for first place. Lovelady traveled to Groveton on Tuesday, Jan. 24, for a game against the Indians, but as of press time the score was unavailable.

Things didn’t start off so well for the Lady Lions as they dropped a game to the Centerville Lady Tigers by a final score of 50-42. The Lady Lions were back to their winning ways on Friday, Jan. 20, however as they defeated the Big Sandy Lady Wildcats 42-29. Lovelady traveled to Groveton on Tuesday, Jan. 24, but as of press time the score was unavailable.

At the Class 1A level, the Kennard Tigers went 0-2 over the past week. The Tigers lost to the Apple Springs Eagles by a final score of 50-45 on Tuesday, Jan. 17 and also lost to the Wells Pirates by a score of 57-46. The Tigers and Lady Tigers had a bye on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
