WEEKLY BIBLE COMMENTARY by Wes Woodard 1-22

Gabriel tells Daniel there will be 69 periods of sevens before Israel’s Messiah “will be cut off” (die) and the city of Jerusalem destroyed, along with the Temple. Gabriel spoke to Daniel in reference to King Artaxerxes I, giving Nehemiah permission to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem and restore it’s gates. (Nehemiah 2:6) This was in 444 B.C.  The Temple was later destroyed in A.D. 70.

Therefore, these 69 periods of sevens must be 483 years. All of this has taken place. One period of seven years remains unfulfilled (vs. 27). This verse refers to a future time of great trouble for the nation of Israel.

Christians will be delivered from this period of God’s wrath (I Thess. 5:9). This is also proved by the absence of the word “church” between Rev. 3:14 to 22:16.  Amen.
