CROCKETT – The Crockett Lady Bulldogs and the Navasota Lady Rattlers were supposed to meet up on Tuesday evening for a basketball game at the Andrew J. Hopkins Activity Center.

However, because of a scheduling conflict, the varsity Lady Rattlers could not make the trip. As a result, the Navasota coaches sent the JV. The JV perhaps should have stayed in Navasota as the Varsity Lady Dawgs destroyed the JV Lady Rattlers by a final score of 57-13.

Crockett jumped ahead early in the game and never trailed. The Lady Dawgs received three points in the first quarter from Mercedes James as a trio of other Crockett players – Shelby Corry, Dea’Junique James and Jada Lockhart – all scored two.

Navasota, meanwhile, only netted two points in the period on single free throws from both Shanquisha Curley and Sha’Dimon King.

With the score 9-2 after the first eight minutes of play, the Lady Dawgs turned it up a notch offensively. Lea’Veon Farris scored eight for Crockett while Lockhart added four.  D. James made three of four from the line to go along with two from Katelin Holmes, M. James and Corry.

In the second quarter, Thomya Lockett scored six for the Lady Rattlers while both King and Brianna Rodriguez scored two to make the score at halftime 30-12, in favor of Crockett.

After the break, it was all Crockett as the Lady Dawgs allowed the Lady Rattlers one point in the third quarter on a Lockett free throw. M. James led the Lady Dawgs in scoring during the third quarter with six while the foursome of Corry, Farris, Holmes and Lockhart all scored two apiece to bring the Crockett lead to 44-13 after three.

While the third quarter saw the Navasota point production almost fall off the charts, things got worse in the final eight minutes for the Lady Rattlers as the Lady Dawgs held them scoreless.

The Lady Dawgs, meanwhile, added 13 to their total with D. James leading the way with six. Anastasia Bolton hit the only three pointer of the game while Holmes and Tracina Moten each scored two to bring the contest to a close with Crockett ahead by a final score of 57-13.

On the game, the Lady Rattlers were led by Thomya Lockett with seven points. Sha’Dimon King chipped in three, Brianna Rodriguez scored two and Shanquisha Curley added one.

The Lady Dawgs were led by the James girls as Dea’Junique and Mercedes James both had 11 points. Lea’Veon Farris dropped in 10 and Jada Lockhart scored eight. Shelby Corry and Katelin Holmes both had six, Anastasia Bolton netted three and Tracina Moten added two to round out the Crockett scoring.

Following the game, Girls’ Basketball Coach Cookie Johnson commented on her team’s performance.

“We played their JV and their JV played our freshmen team. Navasota wound up double booking on us and where they went, there was only a varsity game, so that’s how we wound up how we did,” Coach Johnson explained.

The coach said with the score as lopsided as it was, it gave several Lady Dawgs a chance to shine. “Lea’Veon Bolton stepped up and scored some points for us. Mercedes James played great defense and added some offense for us, too,” she said.

“We’re where we want to be on defense but we’re still trying to be creative and drive to the basket on offense. We don’t know how quick or how fast we really are. If we push the ball up court and attack, we will score every time,” she said.

The Lady Dawgs competed in the Centerville Tournament this week, but as of press time, scores from the tournament were unavailable.
