Weekly Bible Commentary by Wes Woodard Daniel 1:6-16 – “Daniel’s Resolve”

Daniel 1:8 could be the most important verse in Daniel. It simply means that Daniel did not want to eat anything contrary to the Jewish food laws stated in Leviticus 11. Daniel and his three friends sought permission to eat only vegetables for ten days. At the end of the ten day trial period, there appearance seemed better than all the young men who had been eating the king’s choice foods, so they were allowed to continue eating only vegetables and drinking only water. In verse 15 we have the first indication that there were other choice young men from Judah in this training program but they chose to eat the king’s food. Verse 17 indicates that after the end of the trial period Daniel and his three friends looked better than the others. Also their minds seemed to be clearer and their thinking seemed to be more keen. This same verse mentioned that Daniel even understood all kinds of visions and dreams. At the end of the three years the king talked with them and he was impressed with them more than any of the others and they entered into his service.

When I was growing up there was a group of boys in my area that were up to no good. The Lord led me to separate myself from this group. I am very glad that I did. Back then we called bad boys “hoods”. I have often wondered what happened to their leader.
