They Say You Can’t Go Home Again

One Fort Bragg Soldier Proves That Wrong

ELKHART – Home is where the heart is, and Private Kelby Cowan proved that when he drove from Ft. Bragg, North Carolina to Elkhart to surprise his mother in the midst of her work day. Ms. Cowan has been a paraprofessional at Elkhart ISD for the last ten years.
The young soldier graduated from Elkhart in 2012 and enlisted in the Army. So far, his training has taken him all over the east coast, from Fort Benning in Georgia to Virginia and other sites. He is now stationed with the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg, NC.
Training as a 91 Bravo (Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic) complete, Cowan got a little time off to visit family and headed straight home.
The young soldier enjoyed a hug from mom in the classroom when he walked in, a little road weary and still in his battle dress uniform. No one was more surprised than Ms. Cowan when the ‘visitor’ walked in the door.
Cowan hasn’t seen her son in more than a month due to his rigorous training schedule with the United States Army.
The kids in the classroom were just as surprised but obviously shared in the emotional moment.
