The Weekender – I’m Back

[email protected]

I’ve been on vacation for about two weeks and I’m back home in our great county! I had a great time! I took office as a JP 10 years ago and this is my first vacation. Folks I work with will tell you that I needed it and they were glad to see me go. Everyone asks me where my wife and I went. Let me tell you that there was no wife and I on this trip. This was all about motorcycles and male bonding. Don’t try to tell me that I’m selfish for leaving the Strong Woman at home. Every year she gets to go to Dallas alone to see her doctor so she’s had plenty of vacations! It’s overdue that I get one little trip with some old buddies.

She’s been writing the Weekender while I was gone and it’s been reported to me that she did a great job. It’s a good thing that I got back or I’d be out of the picture. When we gave them the vote and a chance they took over. Where’s the loyalty in that? Even my dog switched loyalty while I was gone! When Claire isn’t paying attention I’ll slip the dog some treats and win her back. Honestly, I did have fun and was gone 12 days. We did 4 days in a pickup trailering our motor cycles to and from Colorado and then 8 days and 2400 miles on the bikes. We went through Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona. There will be more to come in a series to be published in the Messenger.

In 1970, Rick Ashwood and I graduated from the Houston Police Academy and became friends and roommates during those single young crazy years. Rick is a great man and real hero. He retired as a narcotics officer after serving his whole career fighting the worst of the Columbians, Jamaicans, Cartel, etc. He and the other men I’m about to mention make Steven Segal look like a wannabe. Johnny Bonds, the subject of the book, The Cop Who Wouldn’t Quit and star of television’s Cold Justice is an old friend as well. Johnny is a true legend in Houston and just went to New York for an interview with Paula Zahn. Mike Harrison and Pat Null are now retired narcotics division supervisors. These two gentlemen are true heroes who chased and arrested the worst of the narcotics trade that infiltrate our major cities. These guys supervised their teams and directed interdiction of the worst of society’s criminals. All of these men courageously and honorably served their communities. They took care of this old man on our trip and it was an honor to ride with them. More to come and it sure is nice to be back in Houston County!
