The Weekender – “Football Season”

[email protected]

Thankfully football season has arrived! If the rest of the season goes like the first week I may not survive. I’m not a huge college football fan but I do pay attention to our Texas teams. I graduated from the U of H and how about that victory over Oklahoma? Wow! I spent a lot of money at A&M getting my daughter there and can you believe their victory over UCLA? Huge! I’ve never been a huge Texas fan but always support them over out of state competitors. Their game against Norte Dame wore me out. That was an exciting game. The Strong Woman and all her family went to Baylor so we always have to get the game face on for that one. Thankfully, Baylor won as well. Even better though is what our local high schools bring us. As a veteran I am so proud of our kids, parents and schools.

Every Friday night they honor our flag and nation by paying respect to our National Anthem. They stand and honor the traditions and sacrifices of others who preceded them to make this country the best place in the world to live. Yes, I believe in American exceptionalism and am very proud of our local folks who get up on their feet and pay respect. Thank you parents, teachers, coaches and students for your respect to our flag. When I first went to fight in Vietnam it really was as simple to me as fighting for my freedom as well as yours. I spent three years there and your patriotism makes it worthwhile. Thank you for loving the United States of America as I do.

I’m about to embark on a motorcycle trip through some of our western states. I’m traveling with 4 other veterans and all are former Houston Police Officers. Along the way I want to check the pulse of some places other than Texas. I’ll talk politics as often as I can along the way. Are we really drifting to socialism or do we still believe in capitalism and the right to work and succeed? Is the welfare state going to grow or will we return to the concept of individual responsibility? What is the effect of 10,000 Syrian refugees and what does the average American think about that? Perhaps the Messenger will give me the opportunity to write a series of what I find? While I’m on the trip, Claire the Strong Woman will submit the article. If she talks about me don’t believe anything she says. Love you Houston County and thanks, Lord, for all our blessings.
