MADISONVILLE – The Westwood Junior Varsity Panthers took to the road on Thursday night as they traveled to Madisonville for a clash with the JV Mustangs.

The JV Panthers led most of the first half but in the end, the Mustangs proved to have a little too much as they ran by the Panthers to win the game by a final score of 29-8.

The Mustangs opened the game with possession of the ball and drove from their own 48 down to the Panthers’ four. It appeared as if the Westwood JV might hold Madisonville out of the end zone but on fourth down, the Mustangs managed to complete a four yard TD pass to take the early lead. After the extra point, Madisonville led by a score of 7-0.

That was all the scoring in the first quarter as the two teams traded punts to close out the period.

The Panthers opened the second quarter with a 30 yard completion as Dalton Brooks hooked up with JP Hollingsworth to move into the red zone. Four plays later, Jamar Clewis bulled his way into the end zone and when Aeneas Page slithered across the goal line on a two point conversion attempt, Westwood led by a score of 8-7.

The lead stayed with the JV Panthers until the 1:48 mark of the first half. After Westwood forced a Madisonville punt, the Panthers took possession. As they began to drive, a turnover changed the course of the game.

A fumble gave the ball back to Madisonville with time running down in the half and the JV Mustangs were able to find the end zone for their second touchdown. The extra point attempt was true and brought the first half to a close with the Mustangs ahead, 14-8.

Westwood opened the second half with possession of the ball but couldn’t do anything with it. The Panthers punted to the Mustangs who returned the ball out to their own 48 yard line. After driving the remainder of the field, the Madisonville JV trotted into the end zone and converted a two point attempt to extend their lead out to 22-8.

The rest of the quarter and most of the final period saw the defenses step up and hold the other team in check. Westwood was finally able to mount a drive that started at their own four yard line, but once again, the turnover bug jumped up to bite the Panthers.

As the hometown fans began to feel a bit of unease, the Mustangs iced the game with a pick six just as the Panthers looked ready to score. The extra point was good and closed out the scoring with Madisonville winning by a final of 29-8.

The JV Panthers are off next week but return to action at home on Aug. 15 as they welcome the Troup Tigers to Westwood for a scheduled 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
